Just Bought A Second Hand Phone? These Are The Best SIM Only Plans

Just Bought A Second Hand Phone

A second hand phone saves money, and so should your phone plan

We all know how expensive phones are these days, and the major manufacturers seem to release new flagship models all the time. If you want to keep up with their frequent releases, you’re in for some major hits on your wallet. Instead, many consumers now choose second hand phones, saving a lot of cash along the way.

If you want a second hand phone, you have several options. Some telcos in Australia sell used phones, and you can also check out websites like eBay. But regardless of where you get your second hand phone, you’ll need an affordable phone plan to match. After all, buying an expensive phone plan for a money-saving phone kind of defeats the purpose.

In this post, we’ll show you the best SIM Only plans for your second hand phone, and give you a resource for comparing even more mobile plans than what we can show you here.

MVNOs offer some of the best SIM Only plans for second hand phones

Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO) resell the major telcos’ networks to consumers. This means they offer you the same coverage as the major telco network they resell, without having to deal with the massive infrastructure costs that come with actually running a telco and providing network services. Those savings in costs mean they can offer you cheaper deals, which are usually more straightforward.

There are so many MVNOs in Australia these days, and that makes the market a hotbed for competition. This also contributes to the many, many value-driven deals you’ll find for SIM Only plans. These MVNOs are all battling for top spots in the telco market, so they tend to offer some of the best mobile plans to get there.

In the past few years, we’ve seen the MVNO market grow to capture a large share from Australia’s general telco market. This is a direct result of their bold offers and consumers taking advantage of those offers.

But the major telcos won’t be left behind. To keep up with the competitive MVNOs in the market, major telcos now offer some great deals as well. For instance, we saw some significant revamps from Telstra last year, for both their prepaid  and postpaid SIM Only plans.

The best SIM Only plans for your second hand phone

We’ve put together a page where you can compare SIM Only plans to figure out the best one for your second hand phone, so check it out for a more in depth look. But in the meantime, here’s a look at five that you should definitely check out:

Dodo is an MVNO reselling the Optus 4G network, which covers 98.5 percent of the Australian population. Dodo offers no lock-in contracts on their three postpaid SIM Only plans, which works perfectly for your second hand phone.

Their plans range from $5 to $30 per month, and they all come with unlimited national voice, as well as unlimited national and international text. Their $5 plan doesn’t come with any data, but it’s perfect for kids and older adults who make more calls than browsing, and you have the option of adding 2GB of data for $10 on that plan or any other plan. Their other plans come with 6GB and 12GB of data, as well as 100 and 200 international minutes to 35 countries. Dodo also offer add on packs for MMS and international minutes.

OVO offer a variety of prepaid SIM Only plans. And if you don’t have a phone yet, you can also buy one from OVO; if you have a phone, just bring it along and plug in your OVO SIM. OVO also resell the Optus network, which means you’ll get some great coverage throughout Australia.

OVO’s prepaid SIM Only plans range from $9.99 to $49.99, and they all come with unlimited national text and most come with unlimited talk as well. Data inclusions range from 2GB to 40GB, and most plans come with some international minutes and you can purchase roaming packs. OVO is also good for customers who love entertainment, thanks to OVO Play – a sports streaming platform that comes with all of their SIM Only plans.

Amaysim  is another great SIM Only option. The MVNO also resells the Optus network for their prepaid plans and data-only plans.

Amaysim’s SIM Only plans range from $10 to $50 (a current promo if offering a $5 plan) including 2GB to 60GB of data. You’ll get unlimited voice and SMS on all their plans, along with unlimited international calls to 10 countries on most plans.

Circles.Life entered Australia’s MVNO market last year, and they offer some great SIM Only plans. Their plans are postpaid month-to-month with no lock-in contracts, and they also resell the Optus network for great coverage.

Circles.Life SIM Only plans range from $28 to $38 per month, but they’re currently running a promo for an $18 plan. All plans come with unlimited talk and text, and you’ll get anywhere from 20GB to 60GB of data (and if you run out of data, they give you an extra 3GB). They have several add on packs available – 3GB data boost for $6, 20GB for $10, and 300 international minutes for $5. If you exhaust your data, take advantage of their data packs or browse at 1 cent per MB.

Belong Mobile

Belong Mobile resell the Telstra network, which means you get the benefit of the best coverage in Australia (98.8% of the population with 3G, and 97% with 4G).

Belong offer SIM Only month-to-month plans. Their plans include 1GB to 40GB of data and unlimited talk and text within Australia. You can also add unlimited International talk and text to 33 countries for an additional $5 on the two smaller plans (the biggest plan already includes this). Also, Belong gives you an unlimited data bank so you won’t lose your unused data.

Final words – Why are SIM Only plans the best option for a second hand phone?

SIM Only plans provide the best option for used phones because they don’t require you to purchase the phone from the telco, or lock your phone to the telco you purchase the SIM from. With so many MVNOs entering the Australian market, you now have a lot of options to choose from, and the competitive market means these options present a lot of value. Compare the SIM Only plans out there to find the best for your second hand phone.
