All About Dodo
If you’d like your energy service, Internet plan, and mobile plan from one company, then Dodo can give you that. They offer all three services to customers at some very competitive price points.
Dodo is under the Vocus Group umbrella which has been around since 2008. However, Dodo was established back in 2001, before they were acquired by M2 Group which later merged with Vocus. Whichever way you look at it, the company has been around for a while, which is always a good indicator of their trustworthiness.
While we’d love to dive into all three of Dodo’s services, we’ll focus on their mobile plans because that’s most likely what you’re here for. We’ll also take a deeper look at their parent company, Vocus Group. Read on to find out all about Dodo’s offers and ownership.
Dodo services and offers
Dodo run a lot of promo offers on their services, so check in often to catch their best deals. Right now, the MVNO is running a 50 per cent off promo on all SIM plans thru the end of March, so you can get your mobile connected for half the price.
Here’s a look at Dodo’s SIM plans for your mobile:
- 3 postpaid month-to-month SIM only plans with no lock-in contract.
- Using the Optus 4G network with, covering 98.5 per cent of the population.
- Plan’s range from $10 to $30 ($5 to $15 with current promo ending 31 March, which slashes prices in half for the first 2 months).
- Plan’s include 2GB to 40GB of data.
- All plans include unlimited standard national calls and SMS.
- The 2 larger plans include 100 to 200 minutes for International calls to selected countries.
- Additional data add-on costs $5 for 1GB.
Dodo have made some great changes to their mobile offers. Last year, their smallest plan (a $5 plan) did not include any data at all – only unlimited national calls and texts. Back then, we understood that some customers may find value in such a plan (kids, the elderly, or people who just don’t need any data), but we also pointed out that the vast majority of Australians want data in their phone plan, especially when they have a smartphone.
Now, the MVNO have added a 2GB data inclusion to their smallest plan, which now costs $10. However, with the current promo, you can get that plan for just $5 including the 2GB data inclusion, and you have the option of adding more data at $5 per 1GB. We think that’s a much better offer than back when that plan had no data at all.

Vocus was founded by Australian investor/entrepreneur James Spenceley in 2008. The company has made some significant mergers and acquisitions over the years. Most importantly, Vocus Group acquired Amcom in 2015 and merged with M2 Group in 2016. These moves made Vocus the fourth largest telco in Australia at that time. Eventually, Mr. Spenceley would leave Vocus in 2016, and Kevin Russel would become CEO of Vocus Group in 2018.
Prior to the Vocus and M2 Group merger, M2 Group had already acquired Dodo in 2013. As a result of the merger, Dodo became owned by Vocus Group, boosting their number of subscribers to over 470,000. Prior to the acquisition of Dodo by M2 Group in 2013, Dodo had over 400,000 customers, which meant the vast majority of Vocus Group’s 471,000 subscribers came from their merger with M2 Group which acquired Dodo.
Despite the boost in subscribers, Dodo has had some challenges over the years. The latest came last year when a federal court ordered Dodo to pay $1.5mn in penalties for false and misleading claims regarding NBN speeds. The problem, however, might go deeper than Dodo because iPrimus, another Vocus Group subsidiary, was also ordered to pay $1mn for the same charges.
Knowing about a telco’s ownership can go a long way. In many cases, a phone company being managed by a parent company that has had customer relations issues in the past, might run into similar issues in the future. A customer might consider such issues to have an idea of how the company would handle any complaints.
In this case, Dodo’s fine for misleading claims about NBN speeds might worry a few potential customers, but it doesn’t seem like such a big deal for their other services. For mobile plans especially, we believe Dodo are a safe bet for great value in a phone plan. Why? Because they are an MVNO – they resell the Optus 4G Network, which covers 98.5 percent of the population. This means that Dodo isn’t the company you worry about when it comes to questions about their SIM plan services – Optus is the telco providing the mobile network, and that network is the second largest in Australia.
Dodo is one of the friendlier brands held by The Vocus Group. Vocus are a staldwort of the telecommunications industry. They’ve been around for years. But remember. Who owns the company is usually less important than (a) the service and services they offer; and (b) the phone network they resell. In Dodo’s case, the phone network is Optus.
