    Sony Xperia Z2 Hardware Review

In a nutshell, what’s the great stuff about the Xperia Z2 hardware?

The Z2 has a host of innovative features a few of which are unique to Sony. Sony are tying their phone in with the rest of their product range to differentiate the Z2. It’s a clever and worthwhile move in a market where it’s tough to tell the difference between a lot of the Android phones out there.

Here’s why we love the hardware on Sony’s 2014 flagship product.

    • Camera: 20.7 MP. This is about as good as you’ll get on the market these days. It’s the same camera as was available in the Z1 but the software has been improved. That means the Xperia Z1 has 4k video recording capabilities. It captures real life at a mind blowing 3840 x 2160 resolution. Although you will have to watch the video on a 4k TV in order to be able to see it.
    • Screen: A beautiful 1080p High Def 5.2 inch screen is as big as you can get conveniently get in your pocket.
    • Waterproof: The Z2 continues the Z1’s waterproof capability. It’s not unique but it is useful, innovative and it positively differentiates the Sony from the iPhone herd.
    • The Z2 has more curves and is thinner than other Xperia range products have been in the past.

Why doesn’t the Xperia range sell better?

Sony make great phones. They’re just not famous  as Samsung or HTC for doing it. The Xperia range is consistently innovative in many regards and should not be ignored simply because the Sony brand is not associated by most people with the manufacture of Android phones. According to IDC, Sony have around 4% of the global share of smartphone shipments. That’s compared to Samsung at 30% and Apple at 15%. The picture in Australia is slightly different, with both Apple and Sony performing better here than they do elsewhere. The Sony Xperia Z2 will be released by Sony in the (Australian – if that’s not clear) spring of 2014. Here is some detail about what the hardware is going to look like.

Let’s start with the screen & display on the Z2?

A phone’s display is probably the most important consideration for most people when they’re picking up a device for the first time. Larger screens make it easier to use a mobile phone conveniently and, after all, the screen is what you’ll spend 90% of your time looking at. The Android market has slowly been ‘inching’ larger for the last couple of years. Samsung, HTC and the lower end manufacturers have been educating people that, in this case, at least, bigger is better. The Z2 has a beautiful  5.2 Inch 1080p. That’s slightly larger than the Z1’s and gives it a PPI (Pixels Per Inch – or PPI is an indicator of the screen quality) of 423. Sony’s triluminos display–available for the first time on the Z2 – allow the user to read messages and watch clips with quality they won’t have seen on a Sony before.

Z2 physical charachteristics– weight, waterproof, colours

The Xperia Z2 weighs a pretty hefty 163 grams which is towards the higher end of what’s comfortable to carry in your pocket (if that’s where you keep your phone). The Sony Xperia was one of the first phones to include waterproof in the ever increasing array of smart phone product features. The Z2 is designed for operation even in adverse weather conditions like heavy rain or snowfall . It is waterproof and dust proof design will allow it to function even when submerged under water for half an hour at a depth of one and half meters. Not quite as good as the Samsung but certainly good enough to keep it safe on a pub table, kitchen top or window ledge. Mimicking the activities of the Apple rival, the Z2 will be available in three different reputation enhancing  colors when it makes it to Australian shores : White, black and purple.

The Z2 has a Quad Core 2.26 GHz processor.

The Sony Xperia Z2 uses the a quadcore 2.26 GHz Snapdragon 800 processor which, like any Quad Core product will give you far more processing than you can probably ever use. The Z2 sports slightly more RAM than you’ll be used to in comparable products at equivalent price points. The new Xperia will ship with 3 GB which, again, will help you whistle around your new smartphone at speeds you’ve only previously dreamt of. The Xperia Z2 also incorporate most of the standard features like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and MicroUSB for faster communication and data transfer with other devices.

    How big is the battery?

The battery storage capacity of the Sony Xperia Z2 at 3200 mAh – which is usefully, slightly higher than other similar high end smartphones – including it’s Z1 predecessor.

The audio visual benefits of the hardware distinguish the Z2

The sensor used in the camera allows the user of the Sony Xperia Z2 to take high resolution photos of 20.7 MP, similar to a standard digital compact camera. Probably the most distinguishing feature and major improvement in the Sony Xperia Z2 to earlier versions like the Z1 is the camcorder for recording videos which has the capacity to record at 4k resolution. Like previous Sony phones, the Z2 benefits from an external, physical camera button – something that it is a constant mystery others don’t provide. The camera is also recessed in to the body of the phone which, in our view makes it far less likely to get scratched or damaged when you’re using it in normal life. For users who watch movies and listen to music on their mobile phone, the Sony Xperia Z2 incorporates front facing stereo speakers with S force surround sound for better audio quality.  Sony is also promoting the built in noise cancellation feature of the X2. Use the headphones the Z2 comes with for smoother sound with fewer interruptions.

    Any other hardware features?

It’s got an external SD card which is always worth having, especially for a device with such a multimedia focus. External memory is always getting cheaper and the ability to ‘how swap’ a memory card in and out of this phone is always useful.

    Sony Xperia Z2 Software Review

The software on the Z2 is all about multimedia

The market for Android phones is a tough one to stand out within. Especially, when, like Sony, you insist on launching a new phone twice a year. We wonder whether, sometimes, these phone manufacturers are just doing ”something” to make themselves different. With the hardware on the Xperia Z2, Sony have focused on the multimedia aspect of their 2014 flagship product and done everything they can to make best use of the other brand properties – games, music and entertainment – that Sony benefits from have. The Z2 is a multimedia story. Sony have supported their multimedia gamble with the software they’ve provided on the new Z2. And it goes great with a host of innovative features. Sony have set the phone auto update. That gives you the opportunity to add more apps for the camera and video player automatically as you run through your 12-24 months with this new phone.

Key features of the software on the Z2

    • Kitkat – the latest Android software : The Z2 runs Android Kitkat 4.4. the latest Android OS.
    • Great installed apps for the camera : It has a bunch of useful software to support what’s probably the hero feature of the Z2 hardware – the 20.7 MP camera. Steadyshot video, an app which provides the ability to add animations, a ‘defocus the background’ similar to what’s on the Galaxy S3 and an improved shutter speed ( the shutter also automatically senses movement in the background of a picture and picks a faster shutter speed if it’s required to avoid blur ) all add value to the new lens.
    • Noise Cancellation : Noise cancelling software within the body of the phone will eliminate background noise for you while you’re on the bus on the way to work.
    • Battery improvement software : Battery stamina software which turns unnecessary components off when required so you can get home without going off the grid.

Below – more details on the software for the Sony Xperia Z2.There is the 4.4 KitKat Android OS on it, which is the latest and greatest Android software available Sony adds its own layer of software on top of Android – as most of the Android manufacturers do.

    Sony’s lifelog software

Lifelog lets you track some of the basic health information which is starting to feature on phones. It ties in with the Sony Smartband and helps you keep track of your exercise – amongst other things. Again, in line with the integration with other elements of the Sony family, the Z2 provided access to games and movies with a swipe up from the bottom of the screen. There is a drop down bar that is divided into two: quick settings and notifications. This makes it a little easier to do some basic things on the phone.

Key software features – camera support

There is a camera inside of the Sony phone with a 20.7 MP camera. Thanks to the software the Z2 is shipped with, users are able to take advantage of panoramic views, face detection and, possibly most importantly for the average user of the video feature on a phone : stabilization software. Together, the Sony collection looks like a nice suite of gizmos. The benefit of having them is that people are able to take high-end photos and videos without spending any time editing them before posting them online. There are multiple entertainment apps pre-installed. They include PlayStation Mobile and Video Unlimited. There are also various widgets that can be obtained from the app switcher, including a new feature : “What’s New” that provides suggestions about video games, TV shows, film, music, and anything else that a person may want to explore. It’s a fantastic featurewhich seems so obvious now it’s been included.

    Digital Noise Cancellation

Those who want to tune out the world with their phone will love what the Sony Xperia Z2 software is capable of. There is DNC or digital noise canceling technology found within the software itself. It is designed to work best with the Sony DNC headphones.

Questions about the Sony Xperia Z2

What types of SIM cards will work in my new Xperia Z2?

The Xperia Z2 takes a Micro-Sim card. Almost everything does. The only exceptions in market at the moment are the latest couple of iPhones and the HTC One M8.

What types of memory cards fit the external storage capability of the Sony Xperia Z2 ?

The Z2 is compatible with micro-SD, micro-SDHC, and micro-SDXC memory cards.

Is it better to purchase the phone on a contract plan or to buy the phone without a plan?

It’s almost always better to take out a SIM Only plan and buy a phone these days. Whether your usage is low, medium or high, there are network resellers which will save you hundreds of dollars if you approach your purchase this way. Check out our SIM Only page for details.

Is the Z2 waterproof ? If so, to what degree is it waterproof ?

Water-proofing for electronics follows a rating system. The Z2 comes with a water-proof rating of IP5. This rating means that the devices are protected both from small splashes and jets of running water. If you drop your device into a puddle by accident; you will not lose the lot. The Z2 is water-proof for up to half an hour.

How much data will I have with the Xperia Z2, and how do I know how much I can use?

Data usage is always a confusing aspect to a phone purchase because it is hard to know exactly how much you are using. We can tell you average usage of data on the latest 4G Android devices ( i.e. on phones just like the Z2 ) is around 1GB. We’d suggest going for a plan that has a bit more than that and monitoring your usage using the online self service facility of the phone company you go with.

How good is the camera ?

The Xperia Z2 has a 20.7 mega pixel camera. The device has an extremely high ratings when it comes to picture quality, colour, and resolution. Picture taking and video making are definitely some of the best features of the new Xperia device.

    How’s the battery ?

The Xperia Z2 has a 3200 mAh, Li-Ion battery. In English please? To put it simply, that’s one of the biggest batteries in a phone of it’s size. Your battery will last at least 15 hours at a time. You will not have to charge it every three hours as you do with some batteries.

    What colours are available?

Unfortunately, the only colours that are available at the moment are black and white. Sony is offering purple but it is listed as “currently out of stock.” If you’re in the mood to express yourself – maybe you could pick up a snazzy, colourful phone case.

How long will delivery take from Vodafone, Telstra, and Optus will be offering the product if I order it online?

Optus’s shipments of the Xperia Z2 started on May 7, 2014. Optus have some online promotional activity including free Addidas training shoes and double data with two-year contracts. They usually say Delivery will be next day if you order online. That’s to metro areas if you order by around midday the previous day. To other locations, well, it depends on the location but it’s typically 2-3 days from when they order is received.Vodafone also released the Z2 in Australia on May 7, 2014. Typical orders take 2-3 days to get to your place from when you place them online. The Vodafone site has the option for you to enter your post code. This allows them to have a better go at getting the delivery timeframe accurate for your particular order.Telstra released the Z2 a couple of weeks later. They will also try and deliver to you next day if you live in a metro area.

What type of warranty will accompany my purchase of the Sony Xperia Z2 ?

Sony electronic items normally come with a one year warranty. However, with the Sony Xperia Z2, for a small fee, Sony will provide an extended three year warranty in most locations. Also, many retailers offer their own protection programs for a small fee upon purchase. And remember, you have your standard Australian consumer rights ! As with any electronics, when you are under contract and the device fails by no fault of your own, replacement is free. If you’ve bought the phone through a phone company ( Vodafone, Optus, Telstra etc ) and it breaks while you’re paying them a monthly service fee, you better believe you can take it back to them !
