4G or fourth generation of mobile technology standards refers to the advanced wireless technology primarily for mobile phones and devices like Mobile Broadband Dongles. The only Apple brand Mobile Phone with 4G network connectivity at the moment is the iPhone 5.

The successor to 3G, 4G ( sometimes called LTE ) offers even faster network connectivity for various mobile services such as data access and voice calls than you’re used to. If the 3G speed is up to 21 Mbps, the 4G network raise that up to 100 Mbps.

What Does LTE Mean On An iPhone 4G ?

Put simply, 4G is lightning fast data on your mobile phone. It’s the best available network access speed, going in to 2013. It probably represents faster internet access on your iPhone 5 than you get on your home fixed broadband connection !

4G iPhone Network Coverage

In Australia, the 4G network was first launched by Telstra in 2011. Optus has 3G coverage in many of Australia’s most significant cities. Vodafone plans to roll out some 4G coverage in the first half of 2013.

All the telcos – Optus, Virgin Mobile, Telstra and Vodafone Australia are working hard and spending significant quantities of money upgrading their existing network coverage to 4G speeds.

Presently, 4G networks are not available in all countries. There are some countries which have limited access to 4G including the UK and USA. Other countries and network carriers are yet gradually rolling out the 4G network.

The iPhone 5 Is A 4G iPhone

Since the 4G network just came out, not all mobile phones are capable to connect in this network. Only the newest lines of mobile phones are 4G-enabled. This includes Apple’s latest iPhone, the iPhone 5.

Using Your 4G iPhone

With 4G on the iPhone 5, data access and other network services are faster than you’ve ever experienced them before.

  • Owners of iPhone 5 can download and stream high-definition video from You Tube, without a stutter.
  • Emails, even those with large attachments can be sent and received in just seconds.
  • Browsing maps, including the onboard iOS maps ( much maligned but actually, turning in to quite a nice feature ) is fluid and fast, even when swooshing around your iPhone 5’s screen quickly.
  • Downloading songs from iTunes is done in a fraction of the time you would experience over a 3G connection.
  • Facetime has been enabled over the 4G network on the iPhone 5, allowing you to talk face to face with the people you want to ( if they too have an iPhone ! )
  • Higher resolution images can be viewed and downloaded in a flash if your iPhone is connected on the 4G network.
  • Browse the web is a significantly improved – you are likely to be amazed and impressed at how quickly web pages load on your iPhone 5.

This is all because of the 4G network.

Which iPhones are 4G Enabled ?

There is some confusion as whether the iPhone 4 or the iPhone 4S is a 4G mobile phone. To make it clear, the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S are not 4G capable. These 2 mobile phones are supported only by 3G networks. This means that they cannot connect to 4G networks and therefore won’t be nearly as fast as the iPhone 5 when using data services.

However, 3G networks are still here to accommodate mobile phones that are not supported by 4G yet.

Though 4G is said to replace the 3G networks, there are no exact dates as to when this will happen so other iPhone users that do not have 4G-enabled iPhones can still enjoy their mobile phones.
