Who is Amaysim ? Whatphone examines the company and their plans

What is Amaysim ? In a Nutshell

What is Amaysim ?

Amaysim is an Australian company with affordable pricing for telecommunications services.

In the opinion of Whatphone, if you’re considering a SIM only deal, you should be taking a serious look at the $39.90 unlimited plan from Amaysim.

The deal which stands out to Whatphone is the $39.90 unlimited talk and text in Australia + 4GB of data.

What is Amaysim ‘Technically’ ?

In telco terms, Amaysim is an MVNO, a Mobile Virtual Network Operator. ( Telcos are just telecommunications companies – like Optus, Telstra, Virgin Mobile or Vodafone Australia. )

What Amaysim means to you is that they have bought what’s called ‘wholesale’ access to the Optus 3G network.

As the customer, you end up with cheaper prices – but with the same great network coverage as Optus. The Optus network covers more than 97% of the Australian population.

MVNOs are their own little telcos ( telecommunications companies. ) The effectively ‘rent’ the network component from a partner – in this case Optus – but they have their own products and they offer customers their own Customer Care / Customer Service organisation.

Feedback on the care from Amaysim is regularly very good. Their call center is based in Australia, in Sydney’s CBD and has more than 35 people in it.

Amaysim has been operating since the end of 2010 and it isn’t going anywhere !

What is Amaysim to real people ?

96% of Australians buy from the top 4 telcos. It’s a bit like the banks.

For some reason, people tend to trust the brands they’ve always known and steer clear of new ideas.

And just like the big 4 banks, if you’re not prepared to shop around, you might be missing on the best deals !

Whatphone offers impartial advice on the best devices and price plan deals. One of our key concerns is the number of people who blow their caps.

In the ‘Mobile State of the Nation’ report produced by Macquarie University, in March 2012, 45% of Australian telco customers experienced ‘Bill Shock’ ( when their bill was more than they expected it to be ) on average, once every 3 months !

The ( median ) average bill excess was $80 per year for Australian every man, woman ( and child ! ) with a mobile phone !

What is Amaysim’s special $39.90 unlimited ( calls and text in Australia deal ? )

Whatphone loves the Amaysim $39.90 plan because, to a large degree, it helps customers avoid bill shock. With no contract ( you just pay month to month, in the industry, these plans are sometimes called ‘On Account’ ) and for only $39.90 a month, customers can avoid excess usage charging outside their cap.

Remember, when you buy your Amaysim plan online, it’ll cost $5 up front.

Inclusions in the $39.90 plan :

  • Unlimited talk and text to Australian mobiles
  • Unlimited Social Networking on Facebook, Twitter etc.
  • 13 and 18 numbers included

Remember though, Whatphone always advises people to read the terms and conditions of the plan they’re signing up to. There are exclusions on the Amaysim $39.90 plan deal, including :

The $39.90 plan from Amaysim is available on SIM and Micro SIM plans. It’s not available for Nano SIMs just yet. The latest news is that they’re planning to have Nano SIMs available for the iPhone 5 by November 2012.

What is Amaysim – Exclusions on the $39.90 plan

Unlimited means unlimited calls and texts in Australia. Not everything is included in the unlimited plan. Here are some of the exclusions ( you’ll pay for these on top of your $39.90 a month ) :

  • International calls
  • Texts to international numbers
  • Data above 4GB
  • Premium SMS
  • Numbers beginning with 19
  • You can Skype for free but you’ll be charged for other forms of video calling

Amaysim plan : Can I keep my number ?

Absolutely. It’s the law in Australia that the telecommunications company you sign up with has to offer you a facility to keep your number.

What is Amaysim’s history ?

Amaysim was started by 4 telco experts with European experience. In 2005 they started Simyo, a similar telco to Amaysim. They launched it in 5 different markets and it spawned a lot of imitators. In Europe, prices are much lower for telco services and, in part, that’s down to the success of Simyo.
