September is sometimes informally referred to as “iPhone month”. Because September often sees the release of the newest one. It’s the time of year when the press talk about the features, and people plan their overnight stay outside the apple store so they can be the first to get their hands on one.

We couldn’t do an article about the iPhone 14 release without talking about the phone itself. The first thing to say is that the iPhone 14 has the longest battery life out of any iPhone that has come before it. This device can last up to 26 hours on a single charge. It’s also highly durable. The ceramic shield and waterproof glass mean that the iPhone 14 can withstand the busy life of its owner. The iPhone 14 has three different storage options 128GB, 256GB, 512GB.

If you enjoy taking photographs, the iPhone 14 can take low-light photos 2.5 times better than the previous iPhone 13. It also comes with a “Super Retina XDR Display“, a 21% larger screen than the previous iPhone, and it can even detect if you’ve been in a car crash! The pro max is like a combination of the Plus and Pro. It’s both faster and larger than the regular. Like the Plus, the pro max has a 6.7inch screen. And, like the Pro, it has a 120Hz refresh rate, three lens camera, and A16 bionic chip.

Different cases can serve different functions. Some are purely for decoration (such as a leather case or case with your photo), and others have a more functional purpose, such as extra protection, providing a pouch to store payment cards, or an armband case to hold your iPhone whilst exercising.

You may also want to purchase electronic accessories such as headphones. Because there is no headphone socket; they will need to use Bluetooth, many iPhone users use air pods, but we respect that these aren’t for everyone. We advise caution if you’re interested in getting any brand new iPhone. With the ‘cost of living crisis’ occurring across Australia, many phone companies are luring new customers with deals that sound great but are not.

Today, many Australians buy too much data and pay for what they don’t use. Phone companies are providing their customers with more data to justify price rises. However, this deal is not as good as it sounds, as most of this data will remain unused. We recommend checking how much data you use in an average month by going to Settings > Mobile Data > Cellular. You don’t want to spend money on data that you have no chance of ever using.

Another way to check how much data you use is via your phone carrier’s app. Most mobile carriers will have an app that allows you to check your data usage- at least for that month. However, looking via your Cellular settings is better as the apps sometimes only display data usage for the current month.

MVNO stands for “mobile virtual network operator”. In Australia, there are three Tier 1 Telcos (Vodafone, Optus, and Telstra). The MVNOs will buy bulk access to their infrastructure and sell it to their customers at a cheaper rate than the Tier 1 Telcos could provide.

As far as we know, none of the MNVOs is selling the iPhone 14, as most only make SIM-only contracts. However, those buying the iPhone 14 outright will likely look to MVNOs to provide cheaper deals than the Tier 1s.

Before you buy the iPhone 14, there are three crucial questions to ask yourself.

1. How will you buy it?
2. How much data will you use?
3. How long will you keep it?

When it comes to buying a new phone, you have two options. The first is to buy it outright. Buying outright will usually cost more at first but will save you money over the course of the phone’s life. Of course, if you do this, you will also need to buy a SIM card- which could be postpaid or pay as you go.

The second option is to pay for it in instalments with a contract. The three Tier 1 Telcos will allow you to pay for it over 12, 24, or 36 months over monthly instalments.

However, if you select this option, you must choose a data plan from the same Telco from which you’re buying your iPhone 14. So, if you want to use a SIM-only deal from an MVNO, you will not be able to pay in instalments.

So, if you pay in instalments, you must pay monthly for both your instalments and data. Telstra offers 40GB of data for $58, and Vodafone offers the same amount for $40 (although Vodafone doesn’t have as good coverage). You can also spend $49 with Optus for 30GB.

If you want to pay extra for more data, Telstra gives you 160GB for $68, Vodafone offers 80GB for $50, and Optus gives 100GB for $59.

Over the contract, you will usually have to pay more than if you bought the phone upfront. Did you know that 50% of iPhone users buy their device upfront and buy a SIM card? Buying upfront gives you more flexibility and a cheaper deal; however, it will require you to have enough money in your account when you buy it.

The ACCC says that most Australians pay for data they don’t use. We’ve already spoken about this, but as phone carriers are becoming more expensive, they are offering more data to justify their higher prices. However, this deal will see people buying data they won’t use. You also probably don’t need high-speed data. 1.5Mbps is usually enough to carry out the functions most people use their phones for. If you’re paying in instalments, you’re already paying about $40 a month for the iPhone; you don’t want to pay $50+ for data you’re not using.

Like many phone companies, Apple has a habit of hiding its long-term costs. You might read that it will cost $49. However, over the 36-month contract, this adds up to $1764. And that does not include the repair, subscription, or roaming costs you may also encounter. If you plan on no longer using your iPhone 14 as soon as the iPhone 15 comes out, it might be financially wise to question your decision.

If you wish to buy the iPhone 14, the first question to decide is upfront or contract. Upfront will be cheaper overall, but the contract allows you to spread the payment. The next question is, “How much data do I need”? Look at how much data you currently use to find the best deal for you. If you can afford to buy your iPhone outright, you’ll likely get a cheaper phone plan from a smaller company than one of the big 3 Australian telcos.

Steve Job’s daughter has recently mocked the iPhone 14. She shared a picture of a man unwrapping a t-shirt identical to the one he was wearing. With this picture, she wrote, “Me upgrading iPhone 13 to iPhone 14”. When the daughter of the man who started Apple is mocking their new products, it could harm their reputation. However, we’ll see how much of an impact her picture had when the iPhone 14 comes out. Upon their announcement of the iPhone 14, Apple also announced their “A16 bionic chip”. But this announcement didn’t get too much attention.
